"I'm not a christian rapper, I'm a rapper that is christian." Have you heard this before? I have, in fact I say it all the time. It seems as if it is the same statement only transposed, however to myself and many other lyricists, it makes a world of difference. Now let me explain myself... I am a devout christian. I have my falls, shortcomings and trials just like anyone else. I'm not perfect, but one thing that stands strong is my undeniable belief in Jesus Christ. I believe that He is the Son of God and He is the only way to salvation. I live my life as a progressive effort to grow more and more in His image. So the topic at hand isn't about a person's allegiance to Christ.

The topic at hand is simply a very simple matter. This has nothing to do with one's salvation, it has to do with one's CONTENT. I don't want to refer to myself as a Christian rapper because I don't always rap about Christ or the Christian lifestyle. My lyrics are not bible filled and spilling over with theology. I don't do an altar call in every song and I'll admit, all of my music is not designed to "win the lost". One thing about me is I have a strong desire to minister. To stand before broken people and share my testimony, preach the word of God, pour my heart out, feel their pain, totally and transparently open myself and be an evangelistic vessel...WITHOUT MUSIC.

My music is my self expression, my communicative tool between me and this world. My music is a combination of what I experience in life, past, present and future. My music is a summation of who I am, what I've done, what I've seen, how I feel etc. I don't make music for others, I make music for God and myself. Don't get me wrong, I will definitely use music to minister to others. I have, will and continue to use it for that, but don't judge me if it is not my primary purpose.Now that may sound selfish, but you have to understand music is an art and lifestyle. Music CAN BE a tool to win others to Christ, and it most certainly can be an evangelistic tool.

However just because someone doesn't use it in that manner, doesn't mean they are "worldly" Here is an example: Sports can also be looked at as an outlet of self expression. How many men/women just go to the court to play ball and let off some steam? Or maybe just to think, or even to relax? This is your self expression. Now is your intent to go out and evangelize and win souls to Christ? Sometimes, yes, but not all the time. However while you are out there, circumstances may arise that present the opportunity to share your faith with someone.

I doubt Tebow is actually playing football to win souls, however through his tool of self expression, he is able to present his faith. The artist that paints a picture of beauty may make no reference whatsoever to Christ in that painting, yet that doesn't make him less of a Christian. Again, this is his outlet of self expression, and though he doesn't paint pictures of crosses all the time, that doesn't mean Christ isn't in his life.I have said this before, and I will say it again...WE MUST HAVE DISCERNMENT! Anyone that is actively and truthfully pursuing a relationship with God, is undoubtedly, undeniably going to produce fruit. Some produce at different paces and speeds, yet you WILL see and hear the fruit of their pursuit. That is completely unavoidable.

For example if you listen to my first songs as a christian rapper years ago, you will definitely hear some stuff that isn't Christ-like. Immature, prideful lyrics with very little passion for Christ. Fast forward a few years and now my faith is very evident and I've matured some. I haven't arrived, but hey, I've grown...a lot! Now if my music sounded the same now as it did years ago, then there would be some problems. I don't understand the deal with listening to one song by someone and asking the question "Where is Christ in this?" How can you come to that summation by listening to one song? How can you rule someone out as a believer because you didn't hear the name of Jesus or any bible references in that song?

Now if you listen to a whole album by an artist and their faith was NEVER made clear, then I would definitely do some investigating and check this person's credibility as a christian. Below is part one of a video interview with Sho Baraka. He is explaining the reason he left Reach as well he is discussing the topic I've just spoken on. In my own opinion, I comprehend that Sho is saying Christians need to step out of the church and into the world in order to represent Christ in the world. I completely agree with that and support that 100%. However I do believe that one must have a very FIRM foundation in Christ with the support of a team of believers before this can be done.

In all honesty, even Jesus was prepared for 33 years before he left the church and went into the world to represent His Father. I think some artists may be doing this prematurely so that is why they get sucked back up by the ways of this world. I personally don't know Sho's level of spiritual relationship with the Father, nor will I assume it. I respect the level of transparency and honesty he displays in his music and I support his decision and the reasons behind it. I know at this point when leaving the "church realm" and entering into the world to rep Christ, you will either sink or swim....I pray Sho walks on water

This one's strictly for the home studio geeks/tweakheads amongst you all. As the digital age really sinks into any and every facet of life, more and more music enthusiasts are setting up their studios at home and turning themselves into a one man army of musician, producer, and recording, mix and mastering engineer. Yet, without adequate knowlegde of some basic vocal recording techniques, this may become your most hellish nightmare yet!

A great lead vocal sound can make all the difference between an average demo and a potential single. Many tracks have been transformed into hits simply by an inspired vocal. It is in recognition of the importance of the lead vocal that top producers often spend such a large amount of time and money working on this one element of a finished track. Below are common questions relating to this one vital aspect of music production.

Q I'm currently using a dynamic mic for recording vocals, but I've heard that capacitor (condenser) mics are better. What difference would I notice if I bought one?

For a start, capacitor (or condenser) mics are generally more sensitive than dynamic mics, which means you'll need less preamp gain to get the same signal level. However, when close miking lead vocals there is seldom a problem in getting sufficient signal level. The main difference you're likely to notice moving from a dynamic to a capacitor mic is that the capacitor mic reproduces high frequencies more faithfully, producing a more open sound than a dynamic model with much more clarity and definition.

Q Does it matter much which condenser microphone I use for vocals?

There are tonal differences between the various mics, but you might be surprised at how little difference in fidelity there is between cheaper and more expensive models. For example, many people would be unlikely to perceive a vast improvement in the faithfulness of the recording when moving up from a Rode NT1 or AT3035, both under £200, to a mic costing over £1000, even though the technical specifications might be better.

So why pay the extra? The reason people are willing to pay for more expensive mics is because each of these has its own unique tonal identity, and there are few situations where the tonal identity of a mic matters so much as when you are recording lead vocals. It is for this reason that you should make every effort to try out as many different models of microphone as you can when you're planning to record vocals. It's by no means a foregone conclusion that the most expensive mic, or the one with the most prestigious brand name, will sound best for the singer you're recording.

Having said this, it's as well to point out that many singers favour the sound of large-diaphragm capacitor mics, so it would be worth making sure that you try at least one or two of these. Tube mics are also often considered particularly suitable for vocals, as they impart a subtly flattering warmth to the sound. However, tube mics are more expensive, and it's worth remembering that their sonic signature won't necessarily suit the voice you're wanting to record.

Q Do I need a shockmount or are they just for posers?

A suspension shockmount of the type normally seen on large-diaphragm condenser mics isn't just for show — it can be extremely effective in reducing the levels of unwanted noise recorded. A studio mic can be very sensitive to mechanical vibrations, so the elasticated suspension is used to isolate it from the stand, reducing the degree to which stand-borne vibrations can reach the capsule.

If you're overdubbing vocals in a quiet room with a solid floor, then you can get away without a shockmount — provided that you're not in the habit of tapping your feet! But a shockmount can be very important in studios with wooden floors, or where several musicians are playing together in the same room.

Q What polar pattern should I use?

Most engineers will use a cardioid pattern, which is more sensitive to sounds arriving from the front than from the back and sides, as this avoids capturing much in the way of ambient sound. However, cardioid designs colour the sound in a variety of ways. The most obvious of these is that they exhibit the 'proximity effect', whereby low frequencies become more pronounced the closer you move to the mic. However, the sound will also change if the singer moves off axis — in fact, even if the singer remains in front of the mic, any reflected sound arriving at the sides or rear of the mic capsule will still be subject to tonal change.

Some recording engineers occasionally use omni-pattern mics instead, which pick up sound equally from every direction. While this can often result in a more transparent sound, it is at the expense of a higher level of recorded ambience.

Q Should I use the microphone's low-pass filter?

Any filtering introduces artefacts into the audio signal, even at frequencies that are well above the filter's cutoff, so it's best avoided if possible. However, there are cases when it can be useful, most notably in reducing the level of handling noise or vibrations transmitted through the mic stand to the body of the mic. Some filters are designed to compensate for the proximity effect, and while these can be useful, it's probably better to deal with this type of problem by repositioning the mic while recording or by using a well-specified parametric equaliser at mixdown.

Q My mic comes with a foam pop shield. Should I use this when recording vocals?

Foam pop shields are actually not very effective in reducing popping and their presence can also compromise the high-frequency performance of the microphone. A fine mesh pop shield mounted midway between the mic and the singer will work much better, and it ought not to significantly affect the sound. You can either buy such a pop shield (which often comes with an attachment to clip it onto the mic stand) or you can improvise your own using a wooden hoop or wire frame with a piece of nylon stocking material stretched over it. You can even use the fine wire-mesh splash guards used to cover frying pans, as these also work perfectly well.

Q How far should I be from the microphone when I sing?

There is some leeway here, but between six and eight inches (15 to 20cm) is generally alright. If you get too close when using a cardioid mic, the bass boost caused by the proximity effect will increase, though this is sometimes the effect which is desired. The important thing is to try to keep the distance between the singer and the mic constant if you want to keep the tonal balance consistent — even slight movements can dramatically alter the sound if the mic is at all directional.

Q Where's the best place in the room to put the microphone?

Most of the time when recording vocals it's best to keep the effect of the room on the sound to a minimum, so keeping well away from the walls is a good idea. In particular, try not to have a reflective wall directly behind the singer. Another thing to avoid is recording in the exact centre of a room, as any standing waves will be in phase at this point, and this will tend to exaggerate the room resonances in the recording. Balancing these two considerations means that you're likely to wish to record close to, but not directly at, the centre of the room.

If you're still getting a boxy sound, no matter how you position things in the room, the first thing to try is working a little closer to the mic — it is usually the nature of the recording room's ambience which causes boxiness. Obviously, the proximity effect may often limit you a little here, and so four inches (10cm) is probably a sensible minimum distance — this will still improve the direct-to-reflected sound ratio. The other thing you can do is ensure that there's something non-reflective behind the singer. Use curtains or hang up drapes, duvets or sleeping bags to soak up the reflections. If the sound is still boxy then it may be that the room is simply too small or too badly behaved and that you should try a different room. However, this is a rare occurrence, except in the case of poorly designed vocal booths.

Q Should I EQ vocals as I record?

My approach is not to use any EQ when recording, as this gives me more scope for adjustment when mixing. In any event, a good mic in front of a good vocalist should sound 90 percent of the way there before you add compression or EQ. Furthermore, you can never really tell what EQ is needed until you hear a sound in context with the other elements of the mix. However, some engineers prefer to EQ as they record, particularly if they wish to take advantage of analogue equalisation before recording onto a digital medium. If you'd like to work this way, be sparing with the processing you do — you won't necessarily be able to remedy any problems later. My recommendation would be to start working without EQ at the recording stage, but if after a period of time you find yourself repeatedly adding similar EQ at the mixing stage, then try using this during recording instead.

Q What do people mean when they talk about using EQ to add 'air' to vocals?

A broad-band, high-frequency EQ can often be useful to enhance the sense of clarity of a sound, and such processing is often referred to as 'adding air' to a recording. Typically, this is achieved using a parametric equaliser set to a fairly wide bandwidth and with a centre frequency of between 14 and 16kHz. In fact, it is because analogue equalisers can often do this without introducing harshness that many engineers prefer to add at least this EQ while they record.

Q Should I compress vocals on the way to the recorder?

If you have an analogue compressor, perhaps as part of a voice channel, then adding a little compression during recording is a good idea, helping to even out the signal levels and also maintaining a good signal-to-noise ratio by using up more of the available recording headroom more of the time. A compressor can also prevent the singer from overloading the input of your recorder, and this is particularly important with digital recorders which can produce ugly distortion if their A-D converters are clipped. Nevertheless, remember that it's not easy to reverse the effects of overcompression, so err on the side of undercompressing — you can always add more in the mix if you need to.

If you're using a digital recording system then any compression you do during recording should be carried out in the analogue domain in order to get the best out of your A-D converters. Compressing in the digital domain during recording will have no audible benefits over doing this same processing during mix down, so it is probably best left until then.

Q What's the best way to get a good performance out of a vocalist?

The complete answer to this question probably requires a degree in psychology, but there are a few simple things you can do. Firstly, set up a headphone monitor mix which is comfortable for the singer, with a little reverb on the monitored vocals to aid natural performance and pitching. Be careful, though, to avoid adding too much reverb — keeping the reverb time below about one second ought to keep you out of trouble.

Some singers have trouble pitching when wearing headphones, because it can be difficult to hear yourself. Sometimes inverting the phase of the vocal's cue feed can help here, because this changes the way the direct sound (via bone conduction in the singer's head) mixes with the sound from the cans. You'll also find that some singers work best with one earpiece on and one off. If this is the case, try to arrange your headphone feed so that you can switch off the phone not being worn, otherwise the sound will leak back into the vocal mic — panning the mix to one side is often possible. (The art of setting up a good cue mix was dealt with in depth in SOS March 2001's Basic Overdubbing feature, if you're after some more tips.)

A singer's environment can make a great difference to the way in which they perform, so many engineers pay special attention to this. This can simply be a question of providing the singer with their choice of refreshment, but can also extend to using subdued or coloured lighting and checking that the recording room is the right temperature. Unnecessary onlookers (and even necessary ones!) can be intimidating to singers, so find out if they prefer to be in their own booth.

If the singer is isolated in a separate room, for whatever reason, then it is extremely important that talkback is used at every opportunity to communicate with and encourage them. Much of the art of producing a great vocal performance is in knowing what to say to the vocalist in between takes. Without a doubt, the best general advice for the aspiring vocal producer is to take any opportunity to encourage and compliment the singer — don't underestimate how much a singer's performance depends on his or her emotional state. If there are problems with a vocal part then suggestions, rather than criticisms, are usually the best bet, for example. If you can keep your vocalist feeling good, the performance will only gain from it.

A final thing to remember is that the first takes a singer does can often be the best. For a start, singers often get fatigued more quickly than instrumentalists, particularly if they are straining to produce their vocal sound — Curt Kobain could apparently only do about three takes of certain songs before his voice was wrecked. Also, many singers find it difficult to sustain their emotional involvement with the song beyond a few takes. For these reasons, many top engineers record even the level-setting run-through, as this can sometimes be the most vibrant and uninhibited performance.

August 20, 2011 was another memorable day in the diary of some celebrities and their fans as they all gathered at the Nubian Beach, a new seaside relaxation spot located at Ibeju- Lekki, Lagos to mingle and network at the event tagged “COTERIE: A Celeb & Singles Beach Rave".The epoch making event was staged by an event management outfit, April City Entertainment. The event created an avenue for many single young adults to have a chance to meet and mingle with some Nigerian celebrities. Prominent on the list of the celebrities were Koffi, Mc Abbey, Doris Simeon (Nollywood), Living Sax (second runner up at Britain’s Got Talent), Chidinma Ekile, Tolu Adesanya and Yetunde Orija (MTN Project Fame), Club X, members Samnem and Sam Jamz, and Gaise, with DJ Gosporella on the wheels of steel. The event was anchored by Mc Acapella. According to the coordinator of the event Atoyebi Atoyegbe, "Coterie seeks to bridge the gap between celebrities and their fans in a serene and relaxed atmosphere; it’s also an avenue to celebrate these celebrities. It also seeks to promote fresh talents and at the same time afford single young adults a chance to mingle and unwind in the ever busy city of Lagos."

Expressing his feeling at the occasion MC Abbey, praised the organisers for putting together the unique event which created avenue for celebrities to meet with their fans one-on-one. He noted that the event was a very unique and lovely concept. Kayode Oresanya aka Living Sax (second runner up from Britain’s got Talent) who was hyper active throughout the event, said, “I am really delighted and can’t wait for the next edition; this event is the first of its kind I’ve attended”. These were the words of DJ Gosporella concerning the event: “This is one of a kind event; I’m one hundred per cent in support of the project. It’s good platform for the celebrities and their fans to interact and mingle."

ARTICLE: "Secular" To The Glory Of God

Recently some popular artists in the Christian Music scene made a decision to stop making music that appeals to the “christian market” in lieu of making music that appeals to the general market. In fact, the word that they used to describe what they do is “secular” music. I believe, as long as they as HUMAN BEINGS stay rooted in scripture, I think it is possible to make “secular” music for the glory of God and advancement of His kingdom. Let me say that again - I think it is possible to make “secular” music for the glory of god and advancement of His kingdom.

Allow me to explain. First, we have to define what “secular” means before we can go any further. There are many connotations of this word which rely heavily on your upbringing. “Secular” could mean evil, not religious, hellish, sexual, violent, anti-God and much more depending on the type of home or church you were/are raised in. But let’s establish a base that we can all work with and agree on. Secular comes from the Latin word saecularis meaning “of a generation, belonging to an age.” So if we were to use this term in its purest meaning then, any music that we do that comes from an artistic expression of a generation such as hip-hop, R&B, techno, etc - are all “secular” forms of music because they come from a generation, not a religious affiliation or lack thereof. So dare I say, in the purest sense of the word, even the most hyper spiritual person you know listens to and creates secular music.

But in a generic sense, we tend to define the term “secular” to say “music and/or work that does not communicate a worldview or separate from religion” and this is the definition we’ll work with for this discussion. Worldview meaning simply how a person views the world. EVERY human being has a worldview and it is PRIMARILY formed by their view of God, the world and its people (also commonly referred to as “religious views”.) In reality though, NO music is made outside of an artists worldview. If you believe that your view of love has no boundaries and it alone decides what actions are okay, then your art will reflect that. It happens all the time in R&B. If you believe that sex is just sex then you’ll make music that reflects that. If you believe that God is most concerned about your personal financial well being above all and He is okay with whatever you do to advance that well being, then your art will reflect that. We see it all the time in songs about “hustling” and more.

Now, what’s interesting is that we rarely ever hear a typical musician say what shapes their worldview. We only hear the result of their worldview in their art. There are exceptions to that statement BUT mostly, they don’t. Often we hear Christians say that we shouldn’t listen to “worldly” music because the listener would adopt the worldview of the song. If you listen to hyper sexual music, you’ll adopt a worldview that makes hyper sexual activity or atleast pre-marital sexual activity okay, right? Isn’t that the core of the argument about not listening to secular music? We believe that we will adopt the worldview of the artist because we hear what fruit the worldview produces in its art, even without explaining the worldview that created it.

So, what if an artist who is held to a BIBLICAL worldview, created art that came FROM this worldview but doesn’t talk directly about the theology that shapes it? Do we believe that the same thing is possible? If its possible to be influenced to explore unbiblical worldviews based on the art created by those worldviews, is it possible to be influenced to explore biblical worldviews based on the art that created it? My answer is a loud, boisterous YES!

I believe that if a group of artists decided to make music FROM their worldview but not directly ABOUT their worldview, a listener could be inspired to explore the worldview it comes from. Do I think it will happen to every person? No. Nor do I believe that music that directly talks about a biblical worldview would inspire everyone who hears it to explore the Bible. If it did then we’d be done by now because SURELY there is enough music out there that points to a Biblical view to save the masses right?

But if we believe that fruit from an unbiblical view can inspire people to pursue that lifestyle but we don’t believe the fruit of a Biblical worldview could inspire people to do the same, then Jesus was lying when He said to do good works that people can see so that “they will praise your God in Heaven.” Jesus believed that if people see the fruit, then some would praise the ONE that created the root.

I’m not saying that all music Christians create should be done in this way. We need people who will point to the light with their art. But we also need people who will talk about what the light helps them see. I’m not saying that its an either/or thing. I’m saying that there can and should be a both/and in our art. Why is it we believe that someone who has a teaching gift can glorify God in his teaching of math or social studies & no one will ridicule him for being a “secular” teacher? We applaud them for “being a light in the darkness.” Yet if an artist does it, he/she is accused of compromise? Could this be because we have begun to worship art? Have we fallen so much in love with art because of the way we connect with it that we have placed it as a god and not a means to see God OR reflect what God has caused us to see? I believe an artist, doctor, salesperson, customer service worker, businessman, teacher, sanitation worker, secretary or student who is convinced of the reality of God, living from truth of the Bible and rooted in Christ can be “secular” …to the glory of God.

Originally from Surulere in Lagos , DMSquared (real names Bayo Oyenuga) grew up in the household of an architect father and entrepreneur mother. INTERVIEW: IBK Tha Spaceship Boi, Maverick, Martian or both?

Ibukun Emuwawon Kevin, better known as IBK Tha SpaceShip Boi, is veritably one of Naija gospel's uber-fast rising phenomena, effortlessly blending and connecting a vast range of seemingly unconnectable music genres together using Hip Hop/Rap/Neo-soul as his weaving thread. Ingenious in his unique interpretations of the artform, incorporating shades of spoken word, african chants and a dint of 'outer space' martian chatter, IBK has undeniably created a unique sonic habitat for himself. Catch the rest of his chat with Club X eMagazine (CXeM) below...

CXeM: Explain who IBK is. In some detail please

IBK: Okay ( with an ‘american radio presenter’ accent), IBK is a lover of God and a purpose driven man. Number one priority on his to do list is to FULFILL DESTINY (in capital letters). He is a young man with lots of energy and chooses to be unique in his expression of self, unpredictable, born and raised in the city of Warri in 1982 (yup! I know, he doesn't look his age right?) to Mr. and Mrs. Emuwawon. He fell in love with music before his hands were able to access the plane were the record player was placed on the shelf. IBK is an ordinary man with an extraordinary God powering his system; he loves poetry and appreciates art, he is drawn to creatives that choose to do conventional things unconventionally. I could go on and on, but I guess I’ve given you pretty much a sneak peek into my biography (big smile)!

CXeM:How did the ‘Spaceship Boi’ attachment come about?

IBK: (Laughs) Spaceship Boi! That was Bez teasing in the studio during a show-reel session with an artist I was to do work with. He goes "Ah? This one? He is spaceship, spaceship boy, his chords are..." (and then he makes a funny hand gesture to illustrate the chords that power my music) ! Funny boy. So ‘Spaceship Boi’ stands for unconventional, not ordinary, unusual, different, unique, separate, fresh, creative, and yes…OUTTA THIS WORLD!!!! I keep getting these flash backs that make me realize that I am not originally from Earth (Winks)!

CXeM:The first time we heard your music at CXeM, we were blown away by it. How would you describe your music? What was it born out of?

IBK: I brand my music "Spaceship Music", which is a blend of hip hop, soul, jazz, and craziness (i.e. all sorts of unusual sounds!). I like doing the unexpected as long as it brings a sweet flavor in the mix. yup! That is the summary of Spaceship Music for you!

CXeM: Who are your musical influences, and why?

IBK: Hmmm! Lots of them! From A Tribe Called Quest to De La Soul, J-Dilla to Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Take Six and much more. They are all exceptional in their interpretations.

CXeM: What is the music making process like for you?

IBK: [Clears throat] First off, I light candles. Second I go to the poultry to check if the chicken laid a golden egg. Third, I fry the egg and eat it with carrots! [Breaks out in laughter]. Nah, just on joke mode! Seriously, it’s all about thinking up an idea and trying to make it happen with the available samples (sounds) you have. It’s not as easy as some people say it is. It could be days, months, years or even twenty minutes! Inspired to make reality the musical thoughts in your mind is the fuel to making it happen. For example, my album, scheduled to be released in the middle of the year was ready in my mind since 2009!

CXeM: What is it about Covenant University that keeps producing all these amazing fresh talent like you, Bez, Dr Frabs, Simi, Rico Slim, etc?

IBK: Yeah! Covenant University sure had and has loads of talent! Others you didn’t mention are Sledge, Emmsong, Ovie, a great praise and worship leader Segun Balogun, and loads more on the way! We had the opportunity to express ourselves during our variety night shows plus I personally got inspired during our entrepreneurial development classes. In addition, four to five years of experience with a man like Bishop David Oyedepo, and you can't afford to think like or be a regular mind! His words inspired by God were seeds in our hearts which are now visible fruits.

CXeM:What are you up to, as in your recent, upcoming projects?

IBK: Currently, I’m making music with Casey (winner of Glo Naija Sings 2010) he a cool dude, plus other artistes. Plus, you know I am working on my own album as well, being produced by the greatest the world has ever seen- IBK Tha Spaceship Boi)! (big smile). It’s really hard and time management is key when you have lots of creative jobs to pull off!

CXeM: As one of the brains behind the popular event ‘TARUWA’, what did you guys set out to achieve with the event? What are your challenges?

IBK: Brains? Hmm…I wouldn’t say I am one of the ‘brains’ behind the event per se, I’ll have to give way more credit to Lidia and Bez and all the folks involved, I just help out the best I can. Taruwa is a blessing to singers/poets/writers that want to share their work with a ready to listen audience. It’s a great avenue to be seen and discovered by big shots in the industry. So as much as possible, it was put together so people that do a nine to five have a place to chill, listen to poetry and songs as they unwind. It’s also a great opportunity to network and meet peeps in the music biz.

CXeM: How did you get into rapping and music production?

IBK: Rapping started for me after my brother and I saw Kriss Kross on TV doing their thing in the 90's.
That sparked up something in us, and being that he was my older brother and role model, I did and found interest in whatever he took interest in. For music production, you know how it is that you have this great idea that you can’t really articulate to the understanding of any other person? That’s sort of what got me into making music plus loads of other reasons

"Dem Na Worry Me"

CXeM: What, in your opinion distinguishes, or should distinguish a gospel act from everyone else?

IBK: It’s your life style, period! You are a product of what you dwell on. You ain’t gotta holler from the mountain tops that "I am a gospel artist ohh!!!!!!!" Just like a lion roars, it doesn’t bleat like sheep do, God's own are a reflection of Him.

CXeM: Why did you opt for the gospel route?
IBK: Like I said, I am here for a purpose. my name is Ibukun, it means "blessing" I believe your purpose is encapsulated in your name. I have being sent to be a blessing and add value to my world and with the gift er music giving to me by God, that's exactly what I'mma do!

CXeM: How did you get to be so up close with Cobhams?

IBK: Haha! the coby story! ok, this is what happened; got his number from a friend, you know her, Simi! she was doin work with him at the time. we spoke via telephone, set up a meet, I was still in school then, got him to here some music I had made at the time and he was blown away like you guys were wen you first heard a spaceship record. Lol! we shared and discovered we were on the same path and it would be beneficial for our growth as creatives! and boom! he said I should come around often to the studio back then wen it was in Issac John street in Ikeja. ever since then we have developed a relationship thats like fam type you dig? (smile)

CXeM:What are we to expect from your upcoming album?

IBK: expect the ordinary being twisted, expect music that breaks musical laws in a musical form, expect to be inspired and blessed, expect an international sound, expect to know your Maker up close and personal.

CXeM: How did the single ‘Tongues’ come about? What sort of acclaim has it gotten overall?

IBK: Tongues!!! Yay!!! I love that record yo!!! Like it wasn't mine. Well, I was in my brother's crib with my laptop, midi controller, and Nidapiano. I had earlier heard a Nina Simone record sampled in the movie Thomas Crown Affair. Remember when he was walking to the art museum? Yeah! With claps and piano. I thought that was great! Anyways, I told Nidapiano to help play what I heard in my head at the time, and I built the music round the laid out piano line he put down, and that's how it happened, you know. Plus for those of you who don't know, the initial part of the vocals that sounds like the Spanish type? This is speaking in tongues, thus the name of the record.

"Tongues" was the single of the month on SoundCity BLAST magazine plus we just made the video so we hope people get to see it and here more about God's word in the record and get inspired to be what God wants them to be.

CXeM: What informed the decision to go all animated for the video of “Tongues”

IBK: Going anime for the video was inevitable, especially at the stage I am in. If it were to be a real human flesh type people moving on your TV screen type of video, the budget to make it happen would be on the high side, may be too high for current status if you know what I mean. plus the idea Toro, Psalmurai and I came up with just had to be done animation style. I got to see ToRo's work on the internet and...boom! I loved it. He just had to be the one to make it happen and even under an extremely low budget, he delivered! by the way, ToRo is also a Covenant University product! Hahahaha!

CXeM: What are the current industry trends that you are happy about, and those you are not so happy about?

IBK: I’m happy we are having more music entrepreneurs plus people that are out to make good music.
The industry is still trying to take form, and like most things in the country is, the business of music is still doggy dog, but it’s a phase.

CXeM: Are you presently signed to any label? Or you are going it independent?

IBK: Currently indie. I go by the production name MARTIANSHIP and in search of an international backbone that I can affiliate with.

CXeM: Amongst some of your tracks are remakes of two songs by two very distinct international acts, Mary Mary’s “Something Big” and Drake’s “Say Something”. Why did u pick those tracks? What was the motivation behind those remakes?

IBK: For "Say Something", my intent was to make people know regardless of what ever profane speech that might have been in the original version, it's a song with a message relevant to people in relationships. I thought it wise to help shine light on the different things that make a relationship work and the fact that its all about giving. So I simply wanted to educate via the record I put out and the topic was perfect.

For the Mary Mary record, I heard it one time and fell in love with it, though I thought there was something missing in the record to lay emphasis on what "I gat to do big", i.e. ME! So I hooked up my remix to help make people focus more on our calling and what we've got to do. Hope it hit the nail on the head.

CXeM: What is the title of your upcoming album?

I've got two titles in mind based on the compilation; "Side Walks and Latency" and "I Come In Peace". It might be a blend of both (big smile).

CXeM: Recently, popular hip hop acts, RoofTop MCs appeared on air and declared that they were no longer to be regarded as ‘gospel’ artists, and they were simply to be seen as Christians making music that ‘cuts across’; they’ve made similar allusions in the past as well. What is your take on this? How do you think this will affect the next generation of Nigerian gospel hip hoppers?

IBK: Everybody has a clear cut vision God has given em, we all need to discover why we are here and our purpose in life, and walk in that purpose. jesus didnt look at another individual to live his life, he sought the face of the Father on a regular. thats whats up.

CXeM: Outside of the music realm, what else are you involved in? As in other creative projects, charities, courses, anything else of note, etc

IBK: Yeah, just got involved with my friend Nikky Laoye on her "Angel 4 Life" project, I am currently director of the C.A.M.P voice training school.

CXeM: Word of advice for upcoming Nigerian acts?

IBK: My advice is simply be! There is only one you on the planet. Discover your purpose in God and walk that path because He is more than willing to lead. be good, be strong, be true, the courageous, be positive. After all, it’s a process. Be bold, be entrepreneurial, be capacity development driven, be prayerful, be hopeful, be a leader, be a servant, be the light, be a teacher, know the business and your craft.
